18 WEEKS, 9 KIDS, 1 FILM.
NOTHING BUT VICTORY!

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR KICKSTARTER:

ABOUT ME:
I’m Andrew Wonder, a filmmaker known for my crazy shooting. Everything from breaking into New York City’s subway system, jumping from rooftops with the world’s greatest Parkour athletes, taking the field with the Boston Red Sox.

My next adventure is an educational program that will bring my radical film techniques to high school students. Focused on teamwork, community and empowerment while using outside the box tactics (think ropes courses and uniformed crew drills), my students will be given a unique film education while working alongside me to complete my new feature film.

The Warhorse Filmmakers are part of a one-time film class at Owen High School working to learn leadership and empowerment through filmmaking. Using outside the box tactics like ropes courses and uniformed crew drills students were taught to be accountable for their actions, work together and use film to be a part of their community.

On June 14th the Warhorse Filmmakers will be screening their short films from throughout the semester (ranging from narrative films about issues in their lives to documentaries about school events and even a special video they made for their moms). Already covered by WLOS, Citizen Times and a new marketing campaign from Google, the Warhorses are excited to share their hard work and success.

As part of the class, students worked alongside their teacher, New York filmmaker Andrew Wonder (http://andrewwonder.com/) to make a feature film. “KING” is a modern retelling of the classic “Of Mice and Men” set in Owen High School and dealing with issues that affect the community of Black Mountain, including keeping homeless students in school. This is a special rough cut screening where the community will be able to give feedback before the the film is submitted to film festivals.

The film was shot over two weeks (including a 2 day blitz where the students shot 30 pages a day) and features actors and crew members from Owen, other Buncombe County Schools, and all over the community.

Hosted by the Asheville Fine Arts Theatre, the program will be in two parts starting at 7pm. Part 1 will feature the Warhorse shorts followed by a Q&A with the students. After a short intermission, Part 2 features a rough cut of “KING” followed by a feedback session with the filmmakers and actors.

We hope you will join us to celebrate the students accomplishments this semester. If you’d like to learn more about the program please check out our class website: http://warhorsefilmmaker.com/

Tickets will be $5.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door. There will also be a donation bucket at the screening to help us raise the $500 we need to finish buying the students equipment to allow the program to continue next year.

First of, props to my little brother Connor. He took most of these pictures you will see through out this blog. His week prior was spent learning how to use the camera and he did an excellent job.
Anyhow, the first thing I did after getting home from school was get dressed into my tux. Quinn and I both had to pose for pictures with our mom and we couldn’t help but mess around. It was a lot of fun aside from suits on a humid 80 degree day is like being roasted on a fire.

After taking some pictures with the family I went off to pick up my gorgeous prom date in my car. Reason why I’m showing you my car is cause I spent 3 hours or so cleaning and polishing it. My freaking dog got inside it and made it muddy >:O.

Cute couple right?
The whole taking pictures with my prom dates parents there was a little awkward. Mainly cause I had to get pictures very quickly and they weren’t saying much. Over all I was just awestruck on how good my date looked. Oh and those boutonnieres are evil! No one can put them on easily.

Ah dinner was so good. We ate so much pizza, and I gotta say it was one of the best pizza’s I’ve ever had.
Thank you to my waitress for being so patient with us being so loud and goofy. A big thanks for the directions there! You saved my butt and also my friends.

Ok, props to Jeff. He got the only kiss that was exchanged at prom.

Alright so leme sum up prom haha. Basically it was just grinding for a long long time. Which was funny for me cause I don’t grind at all. I’m a slow dance kinda guy but when my date wanted to dance it surly wasn’t slow dancing. Afterwards they announced the prom king and queen which I was really glad my friend Elly won queen cause she’s such a sweet girl :)
After the whole king and queen thing I left with kelsey to go see a movie with my friend Derek and his date. Sadly the movies were closed so we chose to finish off the night with fancy McDonalds.

It was very informational getting to see all the many types of tools there are how many different types of plants there are which are both very interesting topics

Getting to meet many different people that are so talented in agricultural things. I liked being there to see all the many different things that are there that people can compete in.

Those people are so talented and being able to see them so there talents was so cool and being able to film it was so awesome.

getting to show my talent why other people got to show theres was quite fun. those people was so talented they knew so much things that though never existed

Blitz Day One

Today was so awesome I got to get out of class tohelp with the movie and act in a big fight scene which was so much fun. But the waiting for when to shoot the scene was so long we had to wait for three hours to shoot the fight scene it was long but fun.

I liked getting to be able to just hang out with the other actors and get to know more about what kind of different acting things they do and learn more about them as a person.

This was the first ever time I‘ve ever acted in a real movie I thought I did pretty well on it and also it was kind a last minute thing for me. Also I’ve never been in a fight before which kind a made me more eager to do it.

The most I got out of today was that no matter how much times you think you’ve messed up keep on doing it. Because for my first time ever acting in a real movie I did pretty badly. Things such as getting out of character which made Andrew so mad at me because I was supposed to be in character until a certain part and I messed up one time on that.

So just getting to know what I’m supposed to do will help me out in the long run when I ever act in a movie again. But it all comes down to having fun and while having fun making a movie.

After school today day i wanted to go to bed because i had to get up at 5:30 in the morning to help shoot the movie but couldn’t because i had other things to do that stoped me from going to bed which completly sucked.

today was fun but also a learning experience for me. I learned many diffrent things that andrew tought me, like stay in charecter no matter if you think that the camera is not around stay in charecter until the director says cut

Personal Update!

I’ve been doing a whole lot lately.

It’s been hard to juggle all of the film-class work with my other classes. But, I have straight A’s right now, which is always good. I really don’t want anything to do with Algebra 2.

Life is pretty good. I’m excited to start my own short movie. Hopefully I’ll be able to start that this week. I’m really excited, I’m proud of the movie idea that I have.

On Friday I had the opportunity to participate in Owen High’s Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser with the purpose of raising money to find a cure for cancer. It was a lot of fun. It started at 6:00 P.M. and ended at 6:00 A.M. It was also very cold. I did a whole lot of walking.

(Please Note, that is not a real baby. That’s one of those robo-imposter babies that they make you take care of in Family Consumer Science, class.)

I was really happy to be a part of it, my Mum had Breast Cancer and Melanoma. All my work at the event was pretty much out of dedication to her. She’s the toughest lady I know.

(Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.)

I’m really excited for summer, I can’t believe there’s only one month left in school. I’m not looking forward to taking my finals at all. Oh well.

As excited as I am for summer, I’m really going to miss this class. It’s gone by so fast!
We started off early in the morning, and the team didn’t really know how to work together. We encountered a lot of problems, and ended up having to re shoot the first scene. But after school everything really came together, and we got through a whole scene. Everyone is settling into their roles quite nicely, but we still have a lot to go.

Also, directing is weird.

It’s like nothing else I’ve experienced before, and it’s nice. I don’t need to answer to anyone really, and I am in command. On the other hand, I’m bombarded with so many questions, ideas, and requests for instruction. If the Assistant Director doesn’t do his or her job, I am overwhelmed and it gets very frustrating.

But I’ll get used to it eventually, I guess.

My Film

So yeah thats basically it. Thats a taste of what I came up with. I think Ill end up filming this with in 2 weeks or so.

Please “LIKE” our facebook page!
Today we did a lot of organizing, and readying for Max’s short.

Today, I worked mostly on cleaning up our sound booth. We operate in the sound booth every day, and it’s grown pretty messy over the course of time that we’ve been working. Most of the other class spent time with Max scheduling for his anticipated Cult Movie! I think I’m acting in it, we’re working that out.

I’ve been super busy lately, especially with the amount of gigs we’ve been doing for the class.

FFA Regional Meet.

Sweeney Todd musical.

Etc.

I’ve also been put in charge of editing the FFA meet, footage. Dang it.

Editing takes forever.

And it’s super monotonous.

But I’m on it. No worries.

Super Blog

From the beginning not many people had faith in what we set out to do. Our goals varied but always seemed impossible. Now looking back it we haven’t failed at one even though there has been a BILLION things that have tried to stop us in our tracks.

The frist thing I can remember is loosing Lis as our main actress. She felt she wanted to play soccer over being an actress in our film so she quit. You know what we did then? We pushed on to find new actors. Eventually we decided to use Alex to play the main role of madison.

Even after we had Alex we ran into more problems. These started with Alex running into a number of unfortunate situations dealing with the school systems and her life style. (read back on our other blogs discussing this). I was personally really pissed off at Alex for some of the carless decisions she made.
After so many situations involving the school system and Alex she was forced to graduate early and quit the role of Madison during the filming process of our movie.

So you know what we did? We pushed on and didn’t look back. We found out main actress Kalie and found that she fit the role so amazingly well. Our small problem of losing Alex had turned into a GIANT success!

After getting Kalie we were going to shoot at a trailer park. I remember my brother Connor calling trailer parks frantically to find one to shoot out. It had turned out the police or FED’s had shutdown our previous trailer park that we were just about to shoot at!
And again do you know what we did? We pushed on even harder and found a trailer to shoot at.

Now this part isn’t as unfortunate as it was just really freaking crazy! When Andrew came up with the idea of shooting 60 pages of script in just 2 days. 2 freaking days!!!! No body does that. A normal movie set only shoots 3 or so!
Everyone figured we couldn’t do it. And you know what? We shot 60 pages of script!

I woke up at 5 in the morning on thursday and friday to boom. That was one of the most stressful things I’ve ever done. It was like taking every bit of my 2 weeks of training and making it a “sink or swim” ordeal. Though instead of sinking it was like if you don’t swim your gonna go off a giant waterfall and die.
From what I saw I thought I did really well. I hardly got in any shots and kept my boom on axis most of the time. For those who don’t know, booming is very hard when you shoot “Andrew Wonder”. His camera movements are very hard to predict.
Over all the blitzkrieg was amazing! We all came through it all and made it a great success.
Thank you so much Cory, Fletcher, Gaile, and everyone else that helped us get through those days.

Now with all of these “problems” we encountered we still did it! We made a movie! Even with other things trying to stop us like crew members quitting, cars breaking down, low budgeting we still pushed through it all.

The only problem we have left is with our kick stater and we need YOUR help. If you would please just donate a few dollars to our class so we can keep making movies even after Andrew leaves us you would be our hero. We just need to raise a little more money to buy our own equipment. So please donate today before time runs out!!

FFA Regional Rally

So today I went on a trip to the FFA regional rally. It was an interesting day..

At 6am the whole warhorse crew and I gathered all are equipment together and started are way to the FFA Rally. (such a bad idea to call it a rally).
First off I had no idea where it was all I knew is that I was doing sound for it. With that I still had no idea when or where I was gonna do sound. Mainly cause I was hardly filled in besides there may be a sound board. That kinda sucked at the moment. So I pretty much packed my whole backpack up with as much sound gear as possible and went to the bus down in the FFA parking lot.

The whole trip took about 45 minutes to get there and it would have been relatively boring if I hadn’t sat next to my friend Devin. Since she and I are good friends we just sat and talked for almost the whole ride.

When we got there we were all given 2 flip video cameras and ordered that they all need to be full. So in total we would have over 12 hours of just flip video footage not counting the 2 5D’s we took.

The group I got to cover with my little nikon camera and 2 flips was the horticulture group. That was one of the most boring things I have ever done. I sat around for about an hour and a half while they tested. So all I did was spent a good amount of my time going and setting up my sound gear in the sound booth and taking pictures of people who werent testing. One gilr i remember vividly was one who was freaking out over her speech and she got mad at me filming her. I just asked why was she mad at me and she said she was just nervous. So I wished her good luck and went on my way.

On my time trying to find something interesting to film I ran into one of my friends Brian from the black hawk FFA. I used to swim with him and it was really cool to run into him. I wasnt expecting that all.

As soon as the testing was done everyone got up and left. I asked where they were going and they just said to get food. I went out side and everyone pretty much just started getting there lunch. Which I was happy to dig in on. After I ate I went around talking to all the people and taking pictures of me(god permitting they didn’t hit me or get mad, for some reason FFA people are very touchy over pictures)

I soon found out girls are so much easier to deal with for photo graphs. By the time the day was half over I didn’t even want to take pictures of most guys cause they are to pissy about cameras.

After the FFA break everyone went to their designated stations. Which unluckily for me my group was tested more! I wanted to pull my hair out. I chose to just take the camera and go film somewhere else that we weren’t covering at the time.

At the end of the “Rally” everyone gathered in the huge auditorium and they started playing music and doing a talent show. Finally something I could do, I basically just ran back and forth between the the H4 up stairs in the sound booth and the H1 downstairs. Mainly cause the volume levels changed so much that there was nothing I could do but change them my self.

As the meeting went on I was informed with the sad news. It was 2 and a half hours long :o. The talent show was all fun and games Ill give them that but as for it taking 2 hours to hand out awards that just plane sucks! lol. Sorry FFA people if that offends you but thats a long time to hand out awards.

The best part of the day I must say was going to Asiana and just pigging out cause I hardly ate all day.

So Andrew came in today and told us we were gonna be making a video to inform everyone about our kickstarter. So we all spent about an hour of class talking and thinking about what the video should be about. after a while of discussion, we decided that we should do a parody or mimic something. Yay! now we just have to decide what we should do a parody of.

“Well class, what should we do?”

Jeff helped us out a lot with coming up with ideas for the video. One thing we thought was really funny was those Gieco commercials. After a lot of other ideas came up and a lot of discussion took place, we decided to mimic the Gieco commercials. Next in this tedious process, we had to come up with the next part of the video by filling in the blank: We donating to kickstarter help make you a better person, did (does)___________________. It took us a while but eventually we went with Jack and Jill.

Once we got our idea we all got Jobs. Austin was Jack, Eve was Jill, and everyone else was Director, AD, or cameraman. Eve and Austin got dressed, I ran up to get a camera and then we started filming. Andrew ended up taking the camera and he got me to be the Gieco guy and say will donating to kickstarter help make you a better person, did Jack and Jill really walk up the Hill to fetch a pail of water.

See the Resemblance?

When we finished filming I thought I did amazing at acting and speaking but then I watched myself a few days later and I saw how I kind of stunk at it. The video turned out great though and we were able to make it happen just before the bell rang.

Also Jeff’s stubble has officially reached “full on beard” status. Due to lack of pictures at the moment, I present to you more of a photo illustration.

Figure 1

He kinda looks like a pirate.

Anyways, Jeff is teaching us how to analyze songs and movies.

The first thing we looked at was his favorite movie American Beauty.

This movie is rich with symbolism. Everything means something. Especially the colour red. Every time you see red it means something. Like, every time. It’s crazy.

We spent some time analyzing a scene from the movie Rent, and the opening scene to Jaws. Apparently Stephen Spielberg is really good at packing a lot of information into a shot, not only visuals, but in sound as well. In the opening scene you can actually hear a radio in the background explaining that there have been a lot of shark attacks in the area recently. It’s really pretty cool.

We also analyzed the song Holiday by Green Day.

I never thought Green Day packed so many metaphors into their songs, there isn’t a lyric wasted. I’ve always thought of Green Day as some punk band with throwaway lyrics, but apparently that’s not the case. So that’s cool.

Andrew should be back either later this week or next week. Then we’ll start working on our own shorts. Exciting!

Interpreting Movies.

Some of the most interesting things I’ve learned about film have been the different psychological and subliminal aspects that lie within movies. These “things” are mostly visual.

For instance, in the movie American Beauty the color tones really set the mood and represent the personality of the scene. For instance, the color red is recurrent. Red being a color of passion, love, and anger. I was really confused when Jeff showed us some of the scenes from the movie and told us to interpret them. This movie is a whole lot of fun to analyze: From colors, to music, to shots. If you haven’t seen it, it’s an excellent movie.

After looking at American Beauty, we moved on to Jaws. Jaws is another excellent movie to interpret. The musical cues are gigantic! If you’ve seen Jaws, you might’ve noticed that every time someone is attacked, the music is playing. It sounds kind of silly, but simple things like that are really brilliant when you take some time to step back and appreciate them.

Jeff showed us this: clip: this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8SnZmUjhAA (Take note of the use of colors, and other symbols. The suspenseful music is my favorite.)

Last but not least, we watched a scene from Life is Beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y9aKqawdUQ

Jeff showed us this scene not for its colors, or tone set by costumes, but for the dialogue and excellent writing.

All of these movies were a lot of fun to interpret, and observe. Sometimes, when you take a step back and really observe a movie, you might notice that there is a lot more symbolism to it than you had originally thought.

Storm and Jeff Day

This week Andrew was out on the other side of the country working on some movie business with some movie people. So with Andrew out of the state, guess who our teacher was… Yep. It was this old picture of Jeff….

The week actually went pretty good. There were no surprise tests (except for one) and Jeff actually got us to do so pretty cool stuff. One day we had Storm (Teddy) with us and Jeff made sure we did something cool. But first Jeff had to talk to us a whole day about stuff related to movies and we just did nothing but act like a normal class. So the next day when storm was there I had to go to the sound booth to go get something (I don’t remember what it was, I think it was a camera) and when I got back to the theater the class was taking a quiz without me… on purpose. They had just started and had only done a few questions so it wasn’t that bad. Jeff was standing on the stage with Storm asking the questions and the class was in the house (the seats) answering his questions. One question was what is Storm’s middle name. That one was easy but only one other person and I got it. It is Storm. Storm even asked a question and it was, “who is Skelatore’s arch enemy”.

Once we finished, Jeff made us switch papers and we had to grade our test. After seeing Eve’s paper I realized that I wasn’t the only one who did bad. I hope those tests don’t count towards our grade.

After all that, we had a stage, Jeff got us to play some acting games. I never heard of a single game we played except for Zip Zap Zop, which I won by the way. We played this one game where there always had to be one person standing, one person sitting or squatting, and one person laying down. A really fun game was the puppet game where 3 people were puppets and 3 people were puppeteers which Jeff was actually pretty good at. There were 2 other games we played too. One was where one person is a boss/manager and one is an employee. The employee is late and 2 people have to act out 3 reasons why he/she’s late behind the manager’s back and the employee has to figure out why he/she is late. The other game we played was and improvising game where 2 actors were on stage and they had to act out a story and one person comes in a random times and switches places with and actor and the story must change. Storm was pretty good at each game and so was Jeff.I’m glad that we didn’t play ninja because Storm would easily have beat us all after all that practice he had with Andrew before the would start filming.

So besides the quiz, the day went really well. I can’t wait to have storm come back and do something with the class. And I can’t wait for Jeff to shave his neck either. That way he can look like he did in this picture.

It was Andrew, Corey, Fletcher, Jeff, Eve, Connor, Austin, Max, Luke, Quinn, and I who stayed to film this scene. I got to be an extra which was pretty cool. Luke, Quinn, Max, and Eve were also extras.

Being an extra in the Cat fight scene made me realize how hard it was not looking at the camera when it’s pointed directly in front of your face. I glanced at the camera a few times when it wasn’t directly facing me so it shouldn’t screw up the movie. As you can tell I just can’t take my eye off the camera.

It was really fun being an extra but it got really confusing when the people at my table left for band practice in the middle of the scene. I wasn’t sure what I should have done to make sure that it didn’t look like people disappeared in the background. I ended up changing seats but I don’t think it helped much. I was so shocked that Kayley and Molly were actually hitting each other in the fight. They even had to get ice afterward. I’m surprised that neither one of them ended up in the hospital. It was really easy to cheer on Kayley during the fight since it was practicaly real.

Before we were filming, I had to help set up the table that Molly gets thrown onto and I had to make it look exactly as it did the last time we tried to film the catfight. It actualy wasn’t that hard getting all the materials we needed and putting them back afterward.

Something also happened that would’ve been cool for me to write about but I just forgot what it was so that’s it for today.

Help us convince Canon to support us by liking us on Facebook!

goodbye cory and fletcher!

So now that the movie is basically made, our mentors Fletcher and Cory are leaving town. Goodbye guys, we’ll miss you!

Not that they’re disappearing forever or anything, or dying, it’s just that they’re going back to New York and won’t be with us in the class anymore.

Fletcher: Thanks a lot for everything you taught me (Max) and Trey! Everything you taught us about white balance, colour, and lighting we will use for a long time. Thanks to you, I know what a good picture or video looks like. I also know how to achieve it!

Cory: Man, who thought there was so much to know about sound? Although I didn’t work with you much, your focus on the job was inspiring, and the knowledge you could share with us directly and through Luke can really help me. Thanks to you I now despise the mp3 format.

Just kidding. But seriously, thanks.

So now all we’ve got left are Andrew and Jeff!

I haven’t seen Andrew in a while, what with the whole making a movie in essentially 2 days thing, but as sad as I am to see Fletcher and Cory go I’m kinda excited to see Andrew back in the classroom.

Anyway, thanks for everything you guys have done for us, good luck back in new york!

love, Max.

So today I was asked to take pictures for the ROTC Ball in short notice. About 2 hours notice before it happened. To be honest I was really pissed off and didn’t want to do it. I was tired and burnt out from Spanish. Blah I don’t like learning Spanish at all but anyhoww.. I decided to go to the ROTC Ball.
***The only thing I have to yell at my class for is for putting 2 completely charged batteries in the charged bin! You guys can’t screw up like that! Your lucky I had one spare.

Before I went to the ROTC Ball I decided to test out the cannon 100mm camera lens on the 5D. I loved it more than you can believe. I sure wish I had money to buy one or use one more often..
(hint hint DONATE TO OUR CLASS!!)

As I went through the Ball it was interesting to see all my friends not used to me taking pictures.

So one thing I did is the ones who were obviously were not used to it I just talked to them. I ate with them, joked around with them and became friends with lots of new people. By doing that I got to get all these beautiful shots of them cause they were used to me. Mainly cause I could make them smile just by looking at them.

Though I did try my best to get natural shots cause I like those more.

Another thing I learned after taking 800 something pictures that sometimes the best ones may be a bit out of focus. One thing I did was made them black and white. It hides the fact that it was out of focus a little. Best part from hat is that I had lots of compliments how good they look :)

At the end of the day I was very happy that I went to the ball. I had a ton of fun taking all the pictures of my friends and the rest of the ROTC. I may new friends and also a little money(though I did not want to take it I was forced to).
Good night :)

Originally, Andrew had appointed me as his assistant. Unfortunately, the filming schedule was changed so I couldn’t be with him for most of the filming.

My real title in the movie was Prop Master. I basically took time to organize, find, and alter any props that would be used in the movie. Before filming started, Eve and I combed through the script and wrote down all of the props that would be needed. Some of the props were really hard to find, especially with our budget.

My biggest role was to make sure that all of the props were organized and boxed. We put our props in boxes based on the setting within the scene of the movie.

For instance, if we were to shoot in the trailer, I would make sure that the box, “Trailer” was ready to be taken away for filming.

It was a whole lot of work. Fortunately, I didn’t make any huge mistakes. It consumed a lot of my time, though. Throughout the filming process I stayed after school almost every day to make sure that the props were ready.

Aside from props, I also did a few side-jobs for other people. I helped Fletcher ready Wes’ House, I made assorted script copies for Andrew, and I pitched in with my classmates with whatever they needed when I could.
